Private Dog Owner Resources
Dog Parks - The Pros and Cons Pros: Dog Parks are good because you are able to socialize your dog and you are able to socialize with other dog owners. Cons: The downside of the dog park is that you are bringing your dog into a confined space exposing them to other animals that may carry ticks, fleas, disease, cause fights etc..
Precautions at Dog Parks You should make sure your dog is vaccinated - and you should check other dogs to make sure those dogs don't have apparent issues - patchy fur, watery eyes, discharge from nose - overall health and disposition of dogs in the park. You need to make your dog's safety and health the priority.
Recommended places to take your dog
- Local dog parks
- National and neighborhood parks
- Walk them in their neighborhood to increase socialization skills with people and other animals (this is an ongoing process)
- Take them on short errands (but don't leave them in the car!) so that they have the opportunity to see new environments and prevent car sickness
- Woods or Forest - but check thoroughly for ticks afterwards
